Pebl

Assistive communication for neurodivergent children and the families who love them

pebl. connect

The engagement

The client came to us with a working name — Gab-On — and the honest conviction that it was not yet worthy of the product beneath it. And the product was quietly radical: a tool that lets children who communicate differently capture and share the small moments that matter to them, giving parents a window into a world that is too often closed. The identity did not yet carry that weight. Our charge was to build a verbal and visual system equal to the product’s ambition — one that could hold its own in a pediatric clinic, in a caregiver’s hands, and in an investor’s deck with the same quiet authority.

The discipline

We do not treat naming as wordplay. We treat it as strategy conducted under constraint. We opened with a deliberately wide aperture — more than fifty candidates spanning the playful, the poetic, the technical, and the whimsical — then narrowed with intent to a shortlist of twenty, and finally to two recommendations. Each was measured against five brand truths the work was required to honor: playful, emotional, modern, scalable, and founder-led. Our house method — Explore, Shortlist, Refine — exists for precisely this reason: a search that could run forever instead resolves into confidence, not overwhelm.

The first directions

The early exploration yielded two credible, mascot-led territories. YakYak was bright and rhythmic — little voices, big stories — a bouncy, social register anchored by a confident animal mark. Gabble was its gentler counterpart, lyrical rather than loud, a penguin at its center, built on the belief that feelings deserve words. Both were strong. Neither was yet inevitable.

The soft reset

The turning point was not a design decision. It was an act of listening. In review, the founders surfaced a single luminous idea — pebbling: the penguin courtship ritual in which a small stone, offered without spectacle, signals care and begins to build a home. For a product serving neurodivergent children — for whom connection is so often made through small, symbolic, non-verbal gestures rather than through volume or speed — the metaphor was not ornamental. It was the thesis of the entire brand. We reset the territory around it, explored twenty-five further names, and allowed the loud phonetics of the earlier work to give way to something quieter and truer.

The resolution

Two names emerged from that reset. Huggle — warm, affectionate, a hybrid of hug and snuggle; a softer hello. And Pebl — minimalist, thoughtful, carrying a quiet depth: the sense that even the smallest gesture holds great meaning. Pebl prevailed on the strength of its restraint. It said less and meant more — exactly as the product does.

The refinement

A name is only the opening move of a system. In the refresh we held the pebl wordmark deliberately unchanged — lowercase, humanist, a calm and trustworthy teal — because continuity is itself a form of trust, and this brand will live across product, clinical, and caregiver contexts for years. The single evolution was decisive: the period after pebl became two small, naturalistic pebbles, slightly different in size, matte and warm. Two, not one — because a pebble given and a pebble received is reciprocity made visible: gesture and response, presence and acknowledgment. From that principle we built a disciplined identity system — a primary lockup for storytelling and caregiver materials, a secondary for product surfaces, and a bare two-pebble symbol for the app icon and the quietest brand moments — governed by four rules: restraint over novelty, emotion over explanation, symbolism over literalism, consistency over decoration. Nothing in the system is ornamental. Every element carries meaning.

The digital ground

A name that cannot be found is a name half-built. We conducted a Digital Real Estate Audit — a ranked, budget-aware review of ownable domains — and secured a footprint (peblpal.com, letspebl.com, and the peblconnect family) that gave a pre-funding company a credible first handshake with the world without overreaching its means.

The outcome

The work carried Pebl from a utility with a name to a brand that embodies its own idea. Where the identity once described connection, it now performs it — understated, symbolic, quietly powerful, and resonant for the neurodivergent users and caregivers it exists to serve. The system shipped into a live product — pebl. connect — with a calm teal-and-cream world and a home built for the child’s whole circle: families, therapists and clinicians, and schools. Pebl is no longer merely named after a metaphor. It has become one.
